The Country
Indonesia is effectively a huge archipelago, with islands stretching from Sumatra (the largest of the country’s islands) in the west over to Irian Jaya (part of which also comprises Papua New Guinea). Among its population
of about 238 million people there is a strong sense of regional identity that has led to numerous internal conflicts, notably East Timor, which eventually won independence in the early 1990s and, more recently, the Aceh province in the north of Sumatra.
The Coffee
This is an amazingly smooth full-tasting velvety coffee with rich chocolaty undertones will round off any meal perfectly.
Indonesia is the second largest producer of robusta in the world after Vietnam and also produces a small but important amount of high quality arabica, with production concentrated in Sumatra and Java. Sumatran coffee has become increasingly valued over the past few years, offering good body coupled with a sweet spicey acidity. Sumatran coffee has a main crop and a fly crop
Our coffee, the best available grade, comes from the PPKGO Cooperative in the Takengong area of central Aceh on the island of Sumatra. The cooperative is 1600 growers from 32 different communities.
PPKGO = Persatuan Petani Kopi Gayo Organic Cooperative
Coop members live in an environmentally sensitive region in and around the buffer zone to Gunung Leuser National Park, an area that contains critical watersheds and sanctuaries for endangered species such as the Sumatran tiger. Producers are dedicated to producing high-quality 100% organic and shade grown coffee while ensuring their production practices conserve resources and preserve the biologically diverse ecosystem in which they live.
